The Fall River Garden Club prepared a number of new plantings in November, 2005, that will emerge as beautiful flower beds in the spring, helping to beautify Fall River. Bulbs have been planted in the center island of Brayton Avenue across from the SERTA terminal, an island at Highland Avenue and Pearce Street, and at James Tansey Square at Pleasant Street and Plymouth Avenue. The Garden Club promotes an interest in growing things, stimulates a desire among amateurs to acquire a greater knowledge of nature, improves the scenic impressions of the city, helps members become better acquainted with native plants, and awards an annual scholarship for the study of horticulture, conservation or a related field to a local student. The Club has more than eighty members who gather for day and evening meetings and support community endeavors such as Arbor Day, Earth Day, City Sweep and participates in the Memorial Tree Planting program. On June 4,2006 the Club is planning a second tour of Oak Grove Cemetery entitled HISTORY UNDERFOOT II with live portrayals at specified burial sites. This major fundraiser is jointly sponsored by the Fall River Garden Club, Historical Society and Little Theatre. The Club is a member of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts and of the National Council of State Garden Clubs. Anyone with an interest in joining may call the President- Barbara Jaryna at 508-676-1027 or email her at mjaryna@hotmail.com.
