The Center for University, School and Community Partnerships presented a day-long conference entitled "Early Literacy Matters," on May 13th at the UMass Professional Learning Center in Fall River. The Keynote on "Using Guided Reading with Struggling Readers" was offered by Irene Fountas, a professor at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. who has been involved in extensive field-based literacy projects. Break-out sessions were also offered on topics such as Teaching Literacy to a Multicultural Audience; Journaling, Literacy and Identity; Engaging Reluctant Readers; and Integrating literacy across the curriculum frameworks. Presentations were also held on Native American Storytelling, Using Drama to Enhance Literacy and Illustration and Literacy. A children's book fair was also sponsored by Baker Books. Literacy is one of the five Action Priority areas for the Healthy City initiative.
 

 

(Top row) Irene Fountas presents numerous practical suggestions for working with struggling readers, both to hold their interest and to increase their confidence.  Fountas has been a classroom teacher, language arts specialist, and consultant in school districts across the nation and abroad. Irene works extensively in the literacy education field and directs comprehensive school-based reform projects. She has received numerous awards for her contributions to Literacy. Her publications can be accessed through Heinemann and she can be contacted through the Literacy Collaborative at Lesley College.
