The first Day of Portugal parade was held on June 4th, 2005, to celebrate Portuguese soccer champion Benfica over rivals Sporting and Porto, their first win in eleven years. Soccer ("futbol") is an avid and heart-healthy pursuit of numerous adults and children in the City of Fall River. Championships encourage many to get involved and promote a sense of cultural pride and connectedness. Approximately sixty percent of Fall River's population is of Portuguese decent, largely from the seven islands of the Azores. Click here to read more in the Herald News article.
