A new IBM Reading Recognition Program is helping adults enrolled in classes at SER-Jobs for Progress master the English Language. SER-Jobs is one of several sites selected by the computer manufacturer IBM to share a $1.5 million national adult literacy grant. Voice recognition technology enables the computer to "hear" and understand a full range of accents as students pronounce words on the screen. It also repeats words so students can hear the correct pronunciation. Ana Pacheco, one of the ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers at SER-Jobs, teaches the daily, one-hour program. In addition to the IBM program, Pacheco also guides students through various ESL programs that are available on the internet (see link below). This enables students who want to work at home or the Fall River Public Library the chance to practice between classes. Pacheco points out that students not only learn English that will help them get their next job, but they also learn computer literacy skills that can be used at many job sites.

(Pictured above) Ana Pacheco guides the program participants through the IBM Reading Recognition Program on  the new computers in a lab specifically devoted to English as a Second Language (ESL) training. The lab is located in a newly-renovated building on High Street directly behind the SER-Jobs main office on Bedford Street. To see the on-line ESL program pictured in the center photo, click here.
