The first-ever Cub Scout
Olympics managed to get in an hour of healthy physical challenges for
members of the area's scouts at Kennedy Park before rain forced a
premature ending to the event. The
Narragansett
Council of the Boy Scouts, who sponsored the Olympics, were happy
enough to promise a return event next year. Peter Ashworth, Massasoit
District Executive, praised both parents and scouts for making sure that
everyone had a chance to try each of the events, including an obstacle
course, a 50-yard dash, a Frisbee competition, and a fly casting event.
Winners received prizes and all participants got a blue ribbon with the
words "I Did My Best." Cub Scout Olympic Committee Volunteer Shawn Young
said that about 100 scouts competed in the heart-healthy event held on
April 8, 2006. The Massasoit District includes seven Fall River Cub
Scout packs meeting at Notre Dame De Lourdes Church, Fall River Lodge of
Elks, Group of Citizens, Union United Methodist Church, St. Annes
Church, Spencer Borden School, and St. Annes Fraternity. For more
information about scouting in Fall River, e-mail Mr. Ashworth at

(Top row) Scouts competed in an obstacle course event that requires them to crawl under a rope mesh. (Middle row) Scouts raced slalom-style through a course of orange cones while carrying a raw egg on a spoon and hops through a series of tires as leader Evan Branco and scout Chris Pritchard watch. (Bottom row) Scouts line up at the starting line for a 50-yard dash, run at top speed to the finish line, and await the results of their race. |
