The Fall River Garden Club invited Jo-Ann Faris, a registered dietitian and nutrition consultant from Newport, on March 14, 2006, to speak to members about how to appreciate the nutritional benefits from a home garden. Ms. Faris is a frequent presenter in the Fall River area and consults to the Fall River Diabetes Association among other local organizations. Her presentation focused on the many types of vegetables that can easily be grown in a home garden to supplement food purchased from the market. Many of the garden club members grow their own fruits and vegetables and realize the health benefits that come from foods that are naturally rich in nutrients while also low in fats and calories. The Fall River Garden Club has more than eighty members who gather for day and evening meetings and support community endeavors such as Arbor Day, Earth Day, City Sweep and participate in the Memorial Tree Planting program. Anyone with an interest in joining may call the President- Barbara Jaryna at 508-676-1027 or email her at mjaryna@hotmail.com.
