The Healthy City Fall River WALKS project held its fourth walk on May 10, 2007, at the Niagara-Maplewood Council on Aging on Stafford Road. Twenty-two senior walkers were joined by fifteen students from the SS. Peter & Paul School on Dover Street. The series of walks highlights some of the walking routes throughout the city that have been identified on the Healthy City web site by a task force on walking. “The seniors at the Niagara-Maplewood center have a lot to teach this community about the value of walking” commented Healthy City Coordinator David S. Weed, Psy.D. “Regular walking can prevent a wide variety of medical conditions that often rob older persons of a positive quality of life", he added. The project also encourages physicians and other medical providers to prescribe walking along with medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other conditions that can be reduced or eliminated with regular exercise.
