The Massachusetts Smoke-Free Workplace Law is primarily intended to protect workers from health hazards resulting from exposure to secondhand smoke. Heart attacks in Fall River dropped by 26% in the first six months that the law went into effect. With very few exceptions, all workplaces must be smoke-free; designated smoking areas are not permitted. In addition, signage must be posted to indicate where smoking is not permitted. Any form of indoor smoking areas are not permitted and outdoor smoking areas must be away from any entrance, open windows or ventilation systems. To assist local employers with compliance with the law that took effect in July, 2004, the Fall River Tobacco Control Program is providing free signage as well as consultation on compliance. The Program mailed letters to all local businesses in mid-August, 2007, advising them of these services. While overall the city has shown a high degree of compliance with the law, continued vigilance and enforcement will help to ensure that all workplaces are in conformity. For more information or to request free signage, contact Tobacco Control Program Coordinator Marilyn Edge at 508-324-2423.
