Students at the C.V. Carroll Elementary School on Hood Street celebrated International Walk to School Day on October 3, 2007. Headed up by Physical education teacher Carol Long, the project began on October 1st to encourage children and parents to walk to school. Walkers received small plastic "feet" as a reward for walking as well as recording their attendance on charts in the school cafeteria. Walking has a number of benefits, including physical exercise and a chance to talk with parents or friends on the way to and from school. "This is really about parents participating in their school," commented School Superintendent Nicholas Fischer. "When parents take time to spend with their children by walking to school, everyone benefits," he added. The project was planned through the School Committee and Healthy City Fall River as a way to encourage more children and adults to walk. To see the Herald News article about the event, click here.
