About sixty children in the
Doran Elementary
School district have been attending a free summer program funded by
the
Travelers Insurance Company with an
After School / Out of School Time (ASOST) matching grant. The
program operates for five weeks from July 8th through August 6th, 2009,
from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Student are also
eligible for a free lunch through the CD-REC
Park &
Lunch program. Program components included art and music along with
cheerleading, cooking and a sports and fitness camp. Children were able
to
reduce their "screen" (e.g., television, computer and video game) time
at home while engaging in vigorous activity and learning some basic
information about nutrition. "This program has been very popular" stated
program director Paul Moniz. "It would be great if we could offer this
program at all of our schools," he added. For more information, contact
Mr. Moniz at
