Children at the new Fonseca and Letourneau Schools were able to sample some new menu items on September 25, 2008, including locally-grown cherry tomatoes, as part of the Children In Balance Project operating in the City's elementary schools. Assistant Food Service Director Lynn Petrowski planned the new menus with an eye toward increased nutrition while still appealing to the children's palates. "We're seeing great results already," stated Petrowski. "The kids are eating things we never thought would appeal to them. Salads, for instance, are flying off the lunch line," she added. Lunches also include low fat milk, more fresh fruits and vegetables and entrees that are nutritious as well as good tasting. As the project proceeds through the year, children will be introduced to more foods, many of which have never been served in school cafeterias.
