The Fall River Street Tree Planting Program held a tree planting at Abbott Court Park in the city’s South End on May 17, 2008. The project was a cooperative effort of the United Parish of Fall River, the Fall River Street Tree Planting Program and the city’s Department of Public Works which used a $2,305 grant from the Massachusetts Releaf Ministry to fund the planting. The ten new trees around the perimeter of the park included six Chanticleer pear trees and four elm trees. This was the fourth grant that the City received from the Releaf Ministry, a partnership between the United Church of Christ Massachusetts Conference and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. Maryann Wordell, president of the Fall River Street Tree Planting Program, talked about the benefits of planting trees. Each tree costs about $200. About 20 volunteers, including church members, tree stewards and neighbors, pitched in on Saturday. The goal of the Massachusetts Releaf Ministry is to help local churches across the state minister to the physical and mental health and community spirit of people living in urban areas in need of rebuilding their urban forest.
