The University of Massachusetts-Dartmout (UMD) brought over two hundred and fifty community leaders, faculty, and students together on May 6, 2009, to consider ways of strengthening social capital in the Southcoast. Social capital refers to stocks of social trust, norms and networks that people can draw upon to solve common problems. Planned by the Center for Civic Engagement at UMD, the summit included a keynote address by Tom Sander, Director of the Saguaro Seminar at Harvard University, a presentation of social capital indicators in the Southcoast by Dr. Clyde Barrow, Director of the Center for Policy Analysis at UMD, and comments from Maureen Curley, the president of the Campus Compact, New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang, and others for the afternoon event. Workshops were offered on recruiting volunteers, improving social capital through service-learning, and improving social capital through alternative media.
