Healthy City Fall River has been sponsoring the development of community gardens throughout the City to permit local residents the opportunity to raise vegetables close to home. Healthy City Coordinator David Weed met with residents of the Doolan Apartments in the City's South End on May 4, 2009 to talk about the possibility of creating one or more gardens within the housing development that serves elderly and handicapped residents. Fall River Housing Authority  Family and Youth Services Director Joey DaSilva discussed the proposal with residents after Dr. Weed outlined the basic organization of community gardens. The tenants' association will discuss the idea in subsequent meetings and determine what they want to do. Click here for more information about the community gardens project, here for soil testing and here for plant and seed selection. For further information, contact Dr. Weed at 508-324-2411or Family and Youth Services Director Joseph DaSilva at 508-675-3527.
