The Diabetes Association, Inc. (DAI) took advantage of the American Heart Association's month-long focus on women and heart disease to sponsor a special program on The Heart of Diabetes for members of its Latino support group. Diabetes is often associated with cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol disorders, obesity and insulin resistance. The rate of diabetes is higher among people of Hispanic descent. DAI Hispanic Diabetes Outreach Coordinator Grace Diaz worked with Stanley Street Treatment and Resources (SSTAR) outreach worker Sonia Talavera to present information to members of the group on February 26th, 2009. Issues around diet and medication were of special concern, as controlling blood glucose levels can reduce cardiovascular damage. The session concluded with a lunch of heart-healthy foods.
