The Fall River Street Tree Planting Program held its annual appreciation award ceremony on Earth Day, April 22, 2009, at the Fall River Public Library. Maryann Wordell, president of the Tree Planting Program, welcomed friends and program participants, citing the importance of voluntary efforts to plant and maintain trees throughout the City. Special recognition was given by Colleen Whip, representing Mayor Robert Correia, Louise Kacynski, Mike Keane and Stephen Plasski for their achievements and volunteerism as community tree stewards. Jane DiBiasio, Brian Pavao, Joe Pavao and Lorraine LaFleur received certificates of appreciation from Mary Ann for their contributions and assistance to the Fall River Street Tree Planting Program. The awards ceremony was followed by the showing of "The American Elm" an 45-minute  film about efforts to bring this majestic tree back after it was all but wiped out over the past fifty years by Dutch Elm disease.
