Employees of the Allied Waste facility on Airport Road in the Industrial Park are encouraged to keep in shape through the fitness program that the company has been providing free of charge to all employees since August, 2009. Over 200 people work out of the Fall River Industrial Park headquarters, 165 of them drivers of the blue Allied Waste trucks that ply Fall River streets every day. "I knew that these guys are not getting the exercise they need to stay healthy," noted Allied Waste general manager Daniel Balbone, "so I provided an exercise room that any of them could use free of charge." He then extended the program to the office workers and brought in a personal trainer two days a week to lead half-hour sessions. About twenty of the drivers and about thirty of the office workers use the facilities on a regular basis. Matt Gagliano leads a weekly nutrition group on Fridays.  "One driver lost 25 pounds this past year," reported Balbone, who uses the facility himself to keep in shape and who promotes worksite wellness. The program even ran a "Biggest Loser" contest this past summer that awarded a fee weekend vacation to the winner. All employees who use the service can get $25 in free merchandise.
