Officials of HealthFirst Family Care Center broke ground at the future site of its new and expanded facility at 387 Quarry Street on December 8, 2010. Begun as a Model Cities project in 1971 to address the need for affordable health care in the neighborhoods surrounding the Center's County Street location, the facility has grown and expanded services while remaining in its original former laundry location. HealthFirst secured an $11.5 million grant from the ARRA Facility Investment Program to refurbish the Quarry Street property, formerly owned by Quaker Manufacturing, only a quarter of a mile from its present location. Completion of the work is expected in December 2011 and will include an increase from 13 to 26 medical exam rooms and an increase in dental operatories from five to nine. The total healthcare space will increase from the current 10,000 square feet to close to 40,000. Specialty services will be provided onsite by Saint Anne's Hospital, Southcoast Hospitals Group, National Physical Therapy, and Standard Pharmacy. Click here for the Herald News story.
