Leadership
SouthCoast
Class of 2010 spent an entire day exploring the social services of Fall
River as part of their ten-month community leadership
program. The day
began in the classroom at Stanley Street
Treatment and Resources (SSTAR) where leaders of a number of social
service organizations described the range of behavioral issues that face
the Southeastern Massachusetts population and the large
array of services designed to assist them. Nancy Paul, CEO and
Executive Director of SSTAR, opened the day with a description of the addiction
services that are provided through her organization in Southeastern
Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Karen Fischer, Director of the BOLD
Coalition, followed with a description of substance abuse prevention
efforts in the Fall River Area. Dr. David Weed, Healthy City Fall River
coordinator and a retired clinical psychologist who worked for the Massachusetts
Department of Mental Health, provided a statistical overview of
substance abuse and mental health problems as well as a brief review of
local services. His presentation was followed by Mary Cochran of Steppingstone,
Sonia Mancini of Child
& Family Services, and Robert Hebda of the Department
of Developmental Services. The day concluded with a tour of the
youth residential services at St.
Vincent's Home. For
