Teams of young people from nine Fall River neighborhoods gathered at the B.M.C.Durfee High School Luke Urban Fieldhouse to compete in the third annual Summer Olympic style competition on August 25, 2010. The event was sponsored by Attorney General Martha Coakley’s Project YES Initiative, Partners for a Healthier Community, Mayor William Flanagan, Saint Anne's Hospital, CD-REC and the Massachusetts Promise Fellowship. Children who have been participating in the summer lunch in the park program run by Community Development Re-creation worked with CD-REC staff to prepare for the competition. Each team had a unique team name based on their park of origin, including the Abbott All Stars, the Father Diaferio Devils, the Griffin Grizzlies, the Kennedy Kennedians, the Lafayette Little Rascals, the Maplewood Mayhem, the North Admirals, and the Pulaski Dream Team. Teams competed for medals in the obstacle course, jump roping, the forty yard dash, the sack race, and the tug of war. Click here for the Herald News article.
