Fall
River Mass In Motion
coordinator Julianne Kelly joined New Bedford Mass In Motion coordinator
Pauline Hamel at the 2011
Equity Summit in Detroit, Michigan, on November 9th and 10th to learn
more about ways that Fall River and New Bedford could effect inclusive,
sustainable change in their neighborhoods involving issues of opportunity,
race, and community building that are central to the equity movement.
The Equity Summit 2011 was the
fourth national PolicyLink Summit that brought together advocates,
activists, policymakers, foundation officials, and equity leaders to
advance an inclusive policy agenda to advance a vision for more
sustainable and equitable development with access to jobs, transportation,
education, health, and housing for all. Following
the trip, the women visited Back
Alley Bikes in Detroit, a project that engages youth in repairing and
building their own bicycles, and learned about Detroit's
commitment to bicycle travel. The Massachusetts Mass
in Motion project aims to promote wellness and to prevent overweight
and obesity in Massachusetts, with a particular focus on the importance of
healthy eating and physical activity by addressing systems,
policies and environmental changes.

(Top row) Mass In Motion coordinators Pauline Hamel and Julianne Kelly saw a little of Detroit in between sessions of the Equity Summit. (Middle row) One of the speakers addresses the participants on the topic of sustainable and equitable development, one of the many sessions that Pauline and Julianne attended over the two days. (Bottom row) Staff and youth work on repairing some of the hundreds of bicycles that are donated to Back Alley Bikes so that low-income kids learn repair skills and "earn" a bike that they can keep to ride. |
