Members of NAMI Greater Fall River offered a program on their new "Hearts and Minds Program at the Corrigan Mental Health Center on May 2, 2011. The aim of the program is to promote sound "mind and body" health practices among individuals who live with serious mental illness. The initiative takes aim at risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking and obesity for major illnesses such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Fall River NAMI president Brenda Venice invited Fall River Tobacco Control coordinator Marilyn Edge, Corrigan dietitian Margot Copeland and Healthy City Fall River coordinator David Weed to address the group on the resources that clients can use to improve their health status. The national program is funded by OptumHealth and the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center at the University of California-San Francisco. The self-help program's focus on wellness inspires health and fitness practices familiar to many Americans €such as diet, exercise and smoking cessation. Click here for a NAMI event last year.
