One of more than 36 Peace Poles created by 25 local organizations was "planted" at the Fall River Police Department on March 14, 2011. The event was one of several initiatives aimed at creating a more peaceful community by raising awareness and promoting empowerment, collaboration and connection to reduce and prevent violence. "Throughout the City, both indoors and out, poles have been planted to serve as a constant visual reminder that peace is truly attainable if the community works together," stated United Neighbors director Wendy Garf-Lipp. Working with the World Peace Prayer Society, United Neighbors uses a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary five-prong approach to address gang and youth violence in the city of Fall River. Follow up activities this year will include an appearance by representatives of the United States Attorney’s office at B.M.C. Durfee High School on March 25, the third annual Peace by Piece Summit, at Kuss Middle School on March 26th, a YouthBuild Peace Garden, a Boys and Girls Club anti-bullying mural and St. Vincent’s Home violence prevention bulletin boards.
