Everett Castro of Green Futures, along with Roger Garant, led a group of nine walkers walk through the Fall River portion of the  Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve on September 15, 2012 in search of three of four "Mystery Stones" that have been located in the area. The heart-healthy four-mile hike along several paths, including the ancient Mowry Path, led to each of the stones, flat circular granite slabs left lying next to larger boulders at the tops of hills in the woods. As to the origin of the stones, "no one has come up with a definitive answer," noted Green Futures Education Director Everett Castro. "They're about a mile apart, each one" he added, along a line from northwest to southeast. One of the stones has clearly carved grooves with align roughly with the summer solstice. (Top row) Everett Castro of Green Futures begins by leading the group onto the Mowry Path that now crosses Innovation Way in the Fall River Industrial Park. (Row two) Everett points out one of the American Chestnut trees that continue to grow from ancient roots along the path. (Row three) The group comes upon the first of three "mystery stones" with a carved groove pattern before later passing a glacial erratic rock. (Row four) After crossing Innovation Way to rejoin the other side of the Mowry Path, the group finds the second stone, this one without carvings but clear evidence that it was man-made, which Stefani Koorey of the Fall River History Club climbs. (Bottom row) The group consisting of Mr. Castro, Jim Hornsby, Barry French, Joan Hornsby, Manny Leite, Stefani Koorey, and Roger and Elizabeth Garant pauses at the third of four stones before resting at the end of the four-mile hike.
