Fall River's B.M.C. Durfee High School's 2012 21st Century Summer Program offers a Recycle-A-Bike classroom program to teach bicycle repair and related topics, such as physics and math, to students who would repair donated bicycles that they would then keep. Six different classes are taught during the six-week summer program in which over 30 students are involved. "This is an idea that has been started in Boston, Detroit and Providence," noted Fall River Mass In Motion coordinator Julianne Kelly who put the program together as a way to generate interest in cycling among young people in the City. "By getting young people interested in cycling early, they are likely to take it up as a life long interest," she added. The Massachusetts Mass in Motion project aims to promote wellness and to prevent overweight and obesity in Massachusetts, with a particular focus on the importance of healthy eating and physical activity by addressing systems, policies and environmental changes.
