The Massachusetts Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program promotes healthy alternatives for children and parents in their travel to and from school. It educates students, parents and community members on the value of walking and bicycling for travel to and from school. Over 5,000 students from all nine of the City's elementary schools and all four of the middle schools celebrated the Massachusetts Walk and Bike To School Day on May 2, 2012, by walking either to or around their respective schools. "This event encourages students who are already walking and students and parents who might consider walking to consider making the commitment," stated School Wellness Coordinator Marcia Picard who helped to organize the events. Students also participated in a first-ever Bike To School event. Click here to see a video of the walkers at each of the thirteen schools. Click here for the Herald News story.
