PARTNERS | HEALTHY CITY  | HOW HEALTHY | VISION | SUMMIT | PRIORITIES | FUNCTIONS | CITY OF FALL RIVER

A small group of people with an interest in learning and practicing yoga as spiritual, mental and physical exercise gather twice a week at the First Baptist Church in Fall River. Led by either a live instructor or Zyrka Landwijt's "Gentle Vinyasa Flow" on DVD, the group spends an hour on Monday afternoons and Friday mornings going through a series of exercises designed to improve flexibility and posture, increase strength, improve concentration, and improve breathing. Yoga, in its many forms, has been practiced for more than 5,000 years, and currently, close to 11 million Americans use it to improve health. Yoga brings together physical and mental disciplines to achieve peacefulness of body and mind, helping to relax and manage stress and anxiety. Traditional yoga philosophy requires that students adhere to this mission through behavior, diet and meditation. The group is free of charge. Anyone with an interest is invited to speak with Rev. Elizabeth Watson at 508-672-5381 or to email her at egwstillwater@gmail.com.

(Middle row) Ed demonstrates how the pose strengthens one's legs, back, shoulders, and arms, building stamina and opening the hips and chest while improving balance. (Bottom row) The group practices the Sukasana or "easy pose", one of the most commonly used of the sitting poses before ending with a relaxation exercise and some stretches.
