The Greater Fall River Fitness Challenge held its 2013 Finale at the Eagle Performing Arts Center on May 24th, celebrating the conclusion of the four-month series that began on January 5th with over 900 enrollees. Partners Health and Wellness Coordinator Annemarie Sharkey thanked the participating organizations, incluidng All Generations Fitness, Fitness Fusion, FitWorks, General Fitness. Greater Fall River Re-creation, and the Fall River YMCA. She also thanked graphics arts teacher Suzanne Ramos and her students at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School who designed all of the print materials for the Challenge and won a gold prize from the statewide Skills USA challenge for their efforts. Team winners included Legg Fitworks, the Blountistas from Blount Fine Foods and first place winners The Legg Ladies. Individual winners included Courtney Tavares in third place, Albertina Belle in second place, and Chad Nunes in first place. Altogether, 2,903 pounds. were lost by all of the participants, an average of 23 pounds a day over the 18 weeks of the Challenge. The Fall River Schools were also honored for involving hundreds of children in special fitness activities this year, including Silvia School physical education teacher Teresa Mahjoory who led dozens of students in planking exercises.
