The Fall River V-Day Committee hosted and event full of free music and dancing at Government Center on February 14, 2013, Valentine's Day. V-Day, an international movement started in 1998 to end violence against women and girls. It serves as a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. The Fall River V-Day group, which started two years ago, is headed by Annemarie Sharkey. For the 15th anniversary of V-Day, a "One Billion Rising" event was launched to bring attention to the number of women who are victims of violence around the world. “It’s a chance to rise and dare to say, 'We won’t take violence against women anymore," said Sharkey. The event was sponsored by United Neighbors of Fall River and BMC HealthNet and attended by members of the City Council and neighborhood associations. Click here for a vide of the event.
