Following an intense blizzard that brought over two feet of snow to the City on February 8th and 9th, 2013, participants in the YouthBuld Program and other volunteers spread out across the City to help seniors and people with disabilities clear the piles of snow that blocked sidewalks and kept cars locked in icy piles along the streets. Dubbed "Operation Shovel" and organized by Neighborhood Outreach Coordinator Perry Long at Government Center, the teams were assigned to offer assistance at no cost to residents who had called to request help. "This is part of our mission to give back to the community," commented YouthBuild Program Manager Carmen Riccardi. Other volunteers included Mike and Dave Pina who helped some disabled people in the Niagara neighborhood. "We realize that everyone is not in a position to deal with this kind of storm, and connecting people with volunteers who can help at no cost is part of the mission of the neighborhood associations," stated Long.
