Voices for a Healthy SouthCoast helped to sponsor a three-session Youth Leadership Training Institute held at the YMCA Southcoast headquarters in New Bedford starting on October 30, 2013 to train youth in advocacy, survey development and presentation skills. The project was part of a five-year cancer prevention grant to address the high levels of obesity and tobacco use and the low level of physical activity found among residents of SouthCoast. Participants received training in advocacy skills that can be applied to the current healthy eating and active living campaign in the Fall River/New Bedford/Wareham Area. Youth learned how to design and implement a survey within their respective communities to assess attitudes toward healthy eating and active living policies. The survey findings will be summarized in a group presentation which the youth created in their final session and will be presented in a community forum later in the year. The training also included one-on-one presentation and public speaking coaching. Click here for a 13-minute video of the beginning of the training.
