Staff from the UMass
Extension SNAP-ED Program came to the Watson
Elementary School on March 19th for the second Family Cooking Night
offered by that organization. UMass Extension Site Director Andrea Gulezian, MEd, RD,
LDN was accompanied by UMass Extension Nutrition Educators Lindsey Magan and Sue
Loughlin to teach a cooking class for parents and students at the school.
The focus was on making healthy snacks and included: 1) Italian Breadstick
Popcorn, seasoned with grated cheese flavoring and Italian-flavored
seasonings; 2) Pineapple Apple Snap Salad, a fruit and veggie salad with
pineapple, apples, raisins and yogurt; and 3) Milky Maple Soda, drinks made
with milk, maple syrup and unflavored soda water. Throughout Southeast MA,
seven SNAP-ED nutrition educators
provide classroom education for children in elementary and middle schools in
Brockton, Randolph, Fall River, New Bedford and Taunton. In addition, this
same staff provides nutrition education programs to families and parents,
students in after school and summer school programs, and food demonstrations
at farmers' markets. |
