The New Bedford Wellness Initiative, in its continued effort to raise health awareness with the goal to help prevent disease and recover from illness through healthy living, organized a screening of the film, Escape Fire (available on-line  for CME credits), on June 9, 2015, at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The film describes the problems with the American healthcare system that, though the most expensive in the world, fails to produce good health outcomes for many people. Segments of the film also suggest alternatives including the use of acupuncture rather than narcotics for pain relief, better foods rather than increasing rates of diabetes, and better ways of incentivizing doctors to give patient-centered care rather than simply more procedures. Invited by local cardiologist Michael Rocha, M.D., Dr. Donald Berwick, former administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under President Obama and a 2013 Democratic Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate, who appears numerous times in the movie, spent an hour with the audience responding to their questions and suggesting what needs to be done to improve the system. Click here for a one-hour video of the event that includes segments from the movie or here for a 50-minute video of just the conversation with Dr. Berwick. For more information on the Initiative, go to the New Bedford Wellness Initiative Facebook page.
