Parents and pre-school children gathered in Lower Kenndy Park on August 18, 2015 for the second day of a week-long Learning Tree event designed by staff of People, Incorporated to increase literacy by involving children in a number of fun activities. Partners School Wellness Coordinator Marcia Picard used the occasion to introduce parents to information about sugar-sweetened beverages by engaging their children in fun with making a different kind of bubbles than the kind found in soda. Ms. Picard showed them that with a simple soda straw, a loop of string, and a pan full of soap and a little glycerin they could engage in hours of very clean fun by making giant bubbles. "It's very inexpensive," noted Picard. "All you need is a box of straws, some string, and a bottle of detergent," she added. "I'm a single father with three kids, and I'm kind of on a budget," said David Rivera who learned how to do it with his eight-year-old daughter, Ariana. The activity was one of many activities planned for the week, including events when children would be read books like Miss Spider's Tea Party and Strega Nona. Click here for a four-minute video of the event and here for a five-and-a-half minute video of Ms. Picard reading Bubble Trouble to three of the children.
