PARTNERS | HEALTHY CITY  | HOW HEALTHY | VISION | SUMMIT | PRIORITIES | FUNCTIONS | CITY OF FALL RIVER

As part of the Sociology/Anthropology Sustainability in Action course at UMass-Dartmouth (UMD) this semester, Professor Rachel Kulick and UMD Permaculture Garden Coordinator Lydia Silva invited a panel of local experts on community organizing to speak to students on October 14, 2015. The course looks at how communities work to create more ecologically, socially, culturally and economically sustainable systems with special attention to the ways that groups attempt to foster justice, equity, and respect for diverse cultures. Participating on the panel were Zoe Hansen DiBello and Adam Davenport from Grow Education at the Marion Institute, Siggy Meilus of Bus Riders United at the New Bedford CEDC, Dave Weed of the Fall River Healthy City Initiative, and New Bedford City Councilor Dana Rebeiro. Each shared their own experiences with community organizing and suggestions for successfully engaging individuals from the community. Students plan to incorporate these ideas into their own sustainable action project on campus. Click here for a 55-minute video of the presentation.
