Students who attend the Mary L. Fonseca Elementary School now have the opportunity to join a "Walking School Bus" every day of the week throughout the school year, thanks to School Principal Alicia Lisi who has begun the daily walks. "Each day there will be two teachers as well as some administrative volunteer walking the same route picking up students to get them to school on time every single day " stated Lisi. Walking to school has been a primary objective of Partners School Wellness Coordinator Marcia Picard who organizes walk to school events twice a year at all of the Fall River Public Schools. "With so much attention on academic achievement, children's physical health is too often ignored as an essential part of learning," stated Picard. "Similar walking groups now head to the Doran Community School and to the Letourneau Elementary School demonstrating that it can be done safely and with lots of participation from children," she added. Click here for an five-minute video of the first Fonseca walk on October 24, 2016. For more information, contact Marcia Picard at 774-319-0107.

(Top row) Staff from the Fonseca Elementary School, including Gretchen D'Ambrosio, Liz Dunn, Principal Alicia Lisi, Karen Wood and Gretchen Baptiste, walk along Locust Street to the corner of Robeson Street. (Row two) Ms. D'Ambrosio and Ms. Baptiste walk to the next painted marker on the sidewalk at the corner of Bedford Street where they stop to pick up three children on the first day of the walk. (Row three) Partners School Wellness Coordinator Marcia Picard walks with the group to the corner of Quarry Street where other children join them. (Bottom row) As more children join the group, Principal Lisi talks with the children along the way until they all arrive at the school in plenty of time before the starting bell.
