Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia II named Michael Aguiar as his proposed Substance Abuse Coordinator, the third announced member of his new administration, on January 11, 2016. "This position will coordinate different non-profits  throughout the City with drug abuse prevention," stated Correia. "He'll also be writing grants, internalizing a lot of our grants so that we can create a more sustainable solution to some of our drug problems," he added. "I want to congratulate the Mayor on his leadership on this particular issue and welcome aboard Mr. Aguiar who I've worked with for a long time," stated Fall River Police Chief Daniel Racine. The Chief expressed concern with the steady rise in overdose deaths over the past several years, with numbers moving from 16 in 2013 to 44 in 2014 and 36 in 2015. Mr. Aguiar has been serving as prevention services coordinator at Stanley Street Treatment and Resources. Part of his efforts will be to establish curriculum based substance abuse prevention programs in the school. Click here for a ten-minute video of the announcement.
