Partners Executive Director Dr. David Weed and Southcoast Health Registered Dietitian Amanda Raposo presented another session in the series on "How to Lose Weight Without Going Hungry" as part of  the Greater Fall River Fitness Challenge. The series is offered to Challenge participants who are attempting to lose weight in the Challenge through exercise, though research is clear that exercise is not a good for long-term weight loss. Low carbohydrate, high fat diets, on the other hand, have repeatedly been  demonstrated to lead to significant weight loss, especially when compared to low-fat, calorie-restricted approaches. In this session, Dr. Weed and Ms. Raposo talk  about the development of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and how both lowering carbohydrates and fasting can lead to the resolution of diabetes, often without medication. Click here for a 45-minute video of the presentation. Click here for the presentation that Dr. Weed gave in the previous week and here for all of his and others' presentations on the topic. For more information, contact Dr. Weed at 508-837-9029.

(Top row) Dr. Weed introduces the session by showing a short video that summarizes how diabetes results from constant high blood sugar levels that lead to insulin resistance. (Row two) Dr. Weed explains how high levels of blood sugar damage the retina, kidneys and peripheral nerves and some of the factors that are associated with the development of the disease. (Rows three and four) Dr. Weed and Southcoast Health Registered Dietitian Amanda Raposo explain why bariatric surgery often resolves diabetes, though the same effect can result from low-carbohydrate diets and fasting. (Bottom row) Dr. Weed explains how Jason Fund, MD, uses fasting to resolve diabetes even in people who are on a lot of medication and have very high level of of blood sugar, before people look over a number of articles on the subject.
