In order to help inform the planning process for the prevention of problem gambling in Southeastern Massachusetts, a dozen representatives from local organizations met in the Gifford Building at Taunton State Hospital on April 3, 2017 for a two-hour discussion. Introduced by Victor Ortiz, Director of Problem Gambling Services for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the session was led by Lauren Gilman, Kitty Bowman and Haner Hernandez of MassTAPP, the Massachusetts Technical Assistance Partnership for Prevention. In April 2016 the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Gaming Commission released a strategic plan to mitigate the harms associated with problem gambling in Massachusetts.  The plan provides detailed strategies to address problem gambling and explores the relationships between problem gambling and other health concerns — laying the groundwork for the development of a strong public health response to those issues most affected by the expansion of gambling in Massachusetts. This meeting is part of a plan implemented by the Department of Public Health to address these issues in Southeastern Massachusetts. Click here for a 76-minute video of parts of the discussion.
