B.M.C. Durfee High School sophomore health class students
are receiving an annual cardiovascular risk assessment through a unique
program sponsored by the
Southcoast Community Benefits Committee. This program creates a unique
profile of each student's weight, BMI, blood pressure and cholesterol
profile and compares it with normative data so each student can see how
they compare. Recommendations for ways of improving their profile through
diet, exercise, smoking cessation and other methods are given, as well as
referrals to primary care providers when indicated. This program will
serve as a lead-in to
the use of a wellness center
that will be constructed at B.M.C. Durfee High School in the summer of
2004 to provide physical health and fitness instruction to students using
personal fitness equipment. The program will provide also provide a
personal health assessment for each student and will establish and monitor
personal fitness goals. |
