Partners for Clean Air is developing smoking cessation resources through St. Anne's Hospital's Community Benefits program, including links to Quit Works and training for local businesses in preparation for upcoming restrictions on smoking in public places. The Partners will also distribute stickers and invite local resident to designate Smoke Free Zones in their homes and automobiles.

3, B) Tobacco education

Goal:

To decrease the initiation and use of tobacco products among youth/adults.

Method(s):

1) Promote and sign-on local businesses to the “Smoke-free Zones” program, 2) Host a drop-in event focused on promoting smoking cessation resources to help residents and business comply with new statewide ban on smoking in the workplace; 3) Co-sponsor with the Fall River Chamber of Commerce an educational meeting to inform members of the statewide workplace smoking ban, effects of smoking/second-hand smoke and area resources for smoking cessation; 4) Provide additional smoking cessation groups, which will require training additional staff to be certified.

Timeline:          

1) Smoke-free zones program underway with area practices to be on-going; 2) Drop-in event to be held by the Fall 2004; 3) Chamber breakfast to be held by Fall 2004; 4) Increase smoking cessation group by Fall 2004.

Indicators:       

1 & 2) Number of participating businesses and clients, 3) Increased staff.

Progress: St. Anne’s Hospital has adopted QuitWorks throughout the Hospital in addition to offering an eight week cessation program four times a year. The have also adopted the READY, SET, QUIT Program for employees and patients in cooperation with Partners for Clean Air.
