Priority Sub-Area:

3, B) Tobacco education

Goal:

To decrease the initiation and use of tobacco products among youth and adults.

Method(s):

Provide customized Tar Wars program to all fourth graders in the Fall River School System. A local poster contest will be held in addition to the National contest to recognize students.

Timeline:

Annual presentation to be provided as part of the health education curriculum - September -- June 2004--2009.

Indicators:

Number of 4th graders to participate in the Tar Wars program.

Progress: In the 2004-2005 school year, over 1,000 fourth graders got a good look at “Mr. Gross Mouth” and decided smoking was not for them. The Fall River School Department’s elementary health teachers welcomed Charlton nurses into their schools to collaborate in presenting the “Tar Wars” anti-smoking program. With the addition of several parochial schools, along with all the public schools, this program will reach almost 2,000 students in this school year

How citizens can  get involved:

Professional health Care providers can support Southcoast Hospitals Group staff by volunteering to conduct the Tar Wars program to the 4th graders, or assist with presentations.
