Transportation Project
Action Plan Participant:
Shepherd's Center and Khmer Family Resource Center

The Shepherd’s Center, an interfaith volunteer corporation, and the Khmer Family Resource Center, a non-profit mutual assistance organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for Khmer families in the Fall River area, have undertaken a relationship-building activity that consists of having volunteer drivers from the Shepard’s Center provide medical transportation to elders identified by the Khmer Resource Center. This program is one of seven Micro-Grant Programs funded by the 2004 Harvard-Pilgrim Healthcare Foundation Healthy Fall River grant.


 

 

Priority Area:  Adult Basic Education, Job Training & Employment 
Priority Sub-Area:   

4, C) Youth and senior employment and volunteerism
 

Goal:

To increase volunteer opportunities for elders while assisting Khmer elders to obtain needed medical care.
 

Method(s):

Translators will be reimbursed for accompanying elders on medical appointment visits.

Timeline:          

September, 2004, to March, 2005.

Indicators:       

Increased number of Khmer elders accessing medical care.

Progress: This project offered the Shepherd Center and the Khmer Family Resource Center an opportunity to form a working relationship that will serve as a foundation to move the transportation project forward.

How citizens can  get involved:

Fall River seniors may volunteer to provide transportation
through the Shepherd’s Center.
