Carroll School Walk-to-School Program
Action Plan Participant:
Carroll Elementary School, Fall River Public Schools

Students at the C.V. Carroll Elementary School on Hood Street initiated a Walk-to-School Program on International Walk to School Day, October 3, 2007. Headed up by Physical education teacher Carol Long, the project encourages children and parents to walk to school on a regular basis to benefit their health and to increase parental involvement with their children.

Goal:

To encourage more children and parents to walk to school on a regular basis

Method(s):

Walkers receive small plastic "feet" as a reward for walking as well as recording their attendance on charts in the school cafeteria

Timeline:          

October through November, 2007, and April through May, 2008

Progress: Nearly 100 children participated in the 2008 pilot program
