Massachusetts Community Water Watch, MassPIRG
Action Plan Participant:
FR Water Watch, Bristol Community College

The Fall River Water Watch project at Bristol Community College has focused on several local waterways, in a campaign to raise awareness around Fall River’s water quality. Water Watch works with groups and community members concerned with water quality problems to raise the level of engagement in our local waterways, and have the waterways become a resource for the community.

Priority Area:  Environment and Recreation
Priority Sub-Area:

2, A)    Cleaner Streets and Parks

Goal:

To organize three or more volunteer clean-ups of local Fall River waterways each year and to continue civic education through grade school presentations and community forums.

Method(s):

 Water Watch relies on student volunteers to: 1) develop educational programs in schools, 2) plan educational community events, 3) participate in water monitoring activities to help identify local problems, and  4) organize waterway cleanups in which community volunteers will develop a sense of stewardship over local water resources.
Timeline:

Continuous

Indicators:        Success will be achieved when the community has developed a greater awareness of water quality issues. Specific goals will be set by student members of the group at the beginning of each semester.
Progress: Fall River Water Watch organized a Make-A-Difference Day clean up along the western shore of North Watuppa Pond on October 23 2004, involving nine students and community volunteers.

How citizens can  get involved:

Citizens can get involved by attending any of our events, organizing a cleanup, organizing an educational event, or by contributing in kind donations.
