Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative attended a two-hour forum held at the Fall River YMCA on November 10, 2016. The event was an opportunity for employers and human relations personnel to meet up and share their wellness ideas as well as to hear about low or no-cost resources that they could use for worksite wellness programs. The first portion of the program featured a panel with experienced providers  Kristi Aimone of Southcoast Health and Susan Potvin of Family Service Association, as well as James Riley, CEO of Better Community Living. The second half featured resource providers Annemarie Holly speaking about the Greater Fall River Fitness Challenge, Dara Midwood talking about the YMCA Southcoast Diabetes Prevention Program, and Shioban Torres, DrPH, MPH of the Mass. Department of Public Health talking about the Working on Wellness Program and the Worksite Wellness Tax Credit. Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative enjoyed a presentation on the upcoming American Heart Association Walks, one at UMass-Dartmouth on May 21st and one in downtown Providence on June 5th. Besides being great opportunities to get some heart-healthy exercise, the walks provide a vehicle for the Heart Association to raise much-needed funds for research and education. Heart Walk Director Andrea Larocque described the walks and encouraged worksites to form teams to help raise funds. Click here  for a 34-minute video of Ms. Larocque's  presentation.

Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative enjoyed a presentation on the Family Service Association Employer Support Program by Development Director Michael Moran on January 14, 2016. The program is an example of worksite employee assistance programs that can help employers provide counseling and other services to employees who are experiencing a range of challenges. Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative enjoyed a presentation on Entrepreneurship For All by Southcoast Executive Director Shelley Cardoos at the December 10, 2015 meeting of the Collaborative. Ms. Cardoos described the program that recruits local mentors from the business community to work with an Entrepreneur over a twelve-month period and provide weekly workshops, free office space, access to technical experts and the opportunity to compete for $30,000 in cash prizes to help launch their businesses. Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative heard a presentation by DPH Worksite Wellness Coordinator Shioban Torres, DrPH, MPH, on November 12, 2015 covering the new Massachusetts Wellness Tax Credit as well as the Working on Wellness Program. The first program gives small businesses a state tax credit for having an employee wellness program. The second helps employers  develop, implement and sustain policies and program to create a supportive work environment to support healthy behaviors .Click here for a 48-minute video 

Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative enjoyed a presentation on the NutriSavings system that connects employee's healthy shopping decisions with financial incentives. Director of Business Development Paul Gilpin came to the meeting on October 8, 2015 to describe the program and answer questions. He explained that the company works with a large number of grocer retail partners to enable employees with registered companies to receive cash incentives for certain purchases. Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative enjoyed a presentation on local farming at their meeting on June 11, 2015 held at the Sylvia Insurance Company headquarters on Faunce Corner Road in North Dartmouth. Scott Peet of Peets Farm in Dartmouth presented first on his livestock farm where he raises chickens, ducks, and sheep. Averyl Andrade of the Healthy Futures Farm in Westport then talked about a new vegetable farm that she and her husband have just started. Click here for a 43-minute video of the presentation.

Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative enjoyed a presentation on April 9, 2015 on a new Diabetes Prevention Program that is being offered by the YMCA Southcoast at their locations in Dartmouth, Fall River, New Bedford and Wareham. Employees can participate in the program on their own time after work or Director Dara Midwood is also available to offer the program at worksites provided that a minimum number of ten participants are signed up. Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative enjoyed a presentation on February 12, 2015 on the upcoming Heart Walk that will be held on June 7, 2015 in downtown Providence, RI. Heart Walk Director Amanda Komorek and Heart Walk Manager Alyssa Feit described the upcoming event and the ways that worksite can get their employees involved. Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative enjoyed a presentation on Stress and Happiness by Eileen Crochiere of the Taunton-based EAP Network at the January 8, 2015 meeting of the Collaborative. Ms. Crochiere covered the many lifestyle factors that can increase or reduce stress and the importance of maintaining a positive attitude that can promote happiness. Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative enjoyed a presentation on the prevention of influenza infection for employers at the November 13, 2014. "The flu season has started," stated Saint Anne's Hospital Infection Control Coordinator Theresa Moss, RN, who recommended that businesses go to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention web site for up-to-date information on preventing influenza infection for businesses. Greater Fall River Partners for a Healthier Community, Inc. sponsored a day-long Work@Health training for a small number of local wellness personnel on September 24, 2014. Partners Worksite Wellness Coordinator Angela Bras provided a Work@Health training for a small number of local employers who will assist local worksites with creating or expanding worksite wellness programs. Members of the Collaborative were offered  presentations at the September 11, 2014 meeting by Lillian Nieves, Pharm. D., Diabetes Educator for Novo Nordisk, Inc. who described her availability to talk with employees about management of diabetes. Lu Brito of the Southcoast YMCA then described a Diabetes Prevention Program that is available to employers in the South Coast Area. Employees at Blount Fine Foods in the Fall River Industrial Park were invited to the second Health and Well Being Fair  held at the facility on August 22, 2014. Organized by Benefits/Human Resource Manager Michelle Cabral, the event offered employees the opportunity to have their blood pressure and cholesterol checked by a staff member of Southcoast Health as well as to get up-to-date information from representatives of the Fall River YMCA. Members of the Southcoast Worksite Health & Wellness Collaborative were introduced to Jason Colberg, DPT, CEAS, and Josh Clare, DPT, CSCS of PT Health and Safety Solutions at the June 12, 2014 meeting of the Collaborative held at Family Service Association in Fall River. Their business specializes in personal health evaluation and education to give consumers the tools to prevent both acute injury as well as chronic disease. Members of the Fall River Rotary Club heard a presentation on September 5, 2013 by Partners Worksite Wellness Coordinator Angela Bras on the employer impact of the Affordable Care Act. Ms. Bras talked about delay in implementation of the employer mandate in the Act as the perfect the opportunity for employers to offer smoking cessation and participation in the upcoming Greater Fall River Fitness Challenge to their employees as a way of improving their health profile. The Center for the Promotion of Health in the New England Workplace (CPH-NEW) at UMass-Lowell presented the major findings of a study of obesity and the workplace on November 13, 2012 at the SEIU Local 888 headquarters in Boston. Partners Worksite Wellness Coordinator Angela Braz participated in the conference along with Healthy City Fall River Coordinator David Weed. Employees at Philips Lightolier, a Fall River lighting company in the Airport Industrial Park with over 600 employees, participated in its fourth annual company-wide health fair held on October 6, 2011 in the company cafeteria. Workers could get their blood pressure and cholesterol checked by Southcoast Hospital staff or get information from Saint Anne's Hospital or twenty community health organizations in the Greater Fall River area.  Click here to see a short video of the event.
