The Community
Police Unit has the flexibility of manpower and hours to accomplish their
goals, including the use of bicycle patrols, and are not required to
respond to radio calls for service - except in an emergency. A CPU Officer
would be assigned to a task and allowed to develop his or her own ideas to
bring the problem to a conclusion. In several cases the unit utilized the
strength of the Flint Neighborhood Association, in combination with other
city agencies, to remedy neighborhood problems, such as the boarding up of
abandoned buildings with the donation of lumber to the Department of
Public Works who boarded up the buildings. Officers cleaned, painted and
repaired the playground with neighborhood children helping them to gain a
sense of pride in their area . | ||
