Feelin' Good
Mileage Club

(Top row, center)  Youth Program Director Bill DaPonte of the Diabetes Association has teamed up with Doran School Nurse Pat Fitta to launch a fitness program that involves students of the Doran School on Columbia Street. The Feelin' Good Mileage Club challenges students to log a total of 500 miles by walking for 20 minutes each day after lunch. Participants will be eligible to enter a drawing for a new bicycle on March 1st. The classroom with the highest mileage will also be treated to a pizza party. "This project has really taken off." remarked DaPonte. "We had no idea it would be so popular with both students and staff." Though the project was initially designed to target children who are at risk of developing diabetes, it involves all students in vigorous activity so everyone benefits. "The children are really enthusiastic," added Nurse Fitta. "They really enjoy it just for the fun they have with each other." DaPonte hopes to replicate the program at other elementary schools in Fall River and New Bedford.
