The Summer Neighborhood Festivals provided a terrific opportunity to engage Fall River residents in activities that teach about nutrition and smoking. (Below, top row) Pat Bebo, Extension Educator from the University of Massachusetts Extension Service involved young people in a game of Nutrition Jeopardy at Lafayette Park. Information about how to prevent diabetes and how to promote overall healthy eating was conveyed in a fun game-style format which included prizes for everyone who participated.

(Middle and bottom rows) Judith Coykendall from Partners for Clean Air, a Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program that promotes smoking cessation resources as well as Smoke-Free Homes in Fall River and New Bedford, offered residents the opportunity to check the level of carbon monoxide gas in their breath. Many who tried the simple test were amazed at how much of the noxious gas was still in their lungs long after they had smoked. Results provided a good impetus for participants to consider cessation as a way of dramatically lowering their health risks for heart disease, cancer and a number of other diseases.. . . .
