The first two neighborhood spring clean-up events of 2004 were held on April 24th as part of the Healthy City Fall River effort to address one of the top priorities identified by city residents in last year's visioning sessions. Anyone who would like assistance in planning similar events at any time this spring or summer can call the City Health Department at 508-324-2405. Arrangements for delivery of tools and pick-up of trash at the end of the event can be made at no charge through the City.

(Top, left) City Councilor Pat Casey and Sandy Beach neighbors get a start on a cleaner city on April 24th by cleaning up the area around the well-known recreation area. Later in the morning, other volunteers gathered a huge pile of discarded items from the beach area. Meanwhile, about ten student volunteers from the Bristol Community College chapter of the Massachusetts Community Water Watch and BCC President Sprega took time on Saturday morning to clear debris from the Henry Street access to Cook Pond in the City's South End. Community Water Watch is a joint program between AmeriCorps and the MASSPIRG Education Fund which organizes students and community members to address water quality issues throughout Massachusetts. Speaking with a Channel 9 news reporter (lower right) is Matt Thomas who organized the event. Also pictured (bottom, center) is Maria Ferreira who pitched in with the annual clean-up.
